Actual start date: June 11, 2021 You are watching a Soo Locks live stream in Sault Ste Marie, Michigan for people who enjoy watching boats. You are welcome to join our chat, but see our rules below. Channel Member Announcement! Become a member of the channel here! https://www.youtube.com/streamtimelive/join This cam is made possible by the Tower of History, which rises 210 feet above Soo Locks and the town of Sault Ste Marie. Visit the Tower for spectacular views from its two observation decks and see the Museum on the lower level: http://www.saulthistoricsites.com/tower-of-history Why is there no sound? Soo’s feed does not have audio to protect the privacy of visitors to the tower. Also, the wind is probably the only sound that can be heard from a microphone in that location. Watching huge ships pass through the locks is a unique experience that cannot be seen anywhere else in the United States! The locks consist of two channels and four locks that allow vessels of many types/sizes to safely traverse the 21-foot drop in elevation of the St. Mary’s River between Lake Superior and Lakes Michigan and Huron. From the observation decks, you can watch “Lakers” and “Salties” (ocean vessels) as they travel the seaway between ports and navigate rising or falling water levels. On average, between seven and ten thousand ships pass through the locks during shipping season each year. Built in 1855, these locks connect Lake Superior to Lake Huron and beyond. Freighters, barges, tugboats and more lift and lower the 21-foot difference between Superior and Huron.
